When I started seeing these HP ads last year,
I thought to myself, "how cool, some hipsters are gonna take an awesome trip to Africa and document it all while being sponsored by a computer co...AWESOME. They'll probably get cool gadgets to document it too." Yeah it says it in the ad but who really pays attention to commercials?
Then I found out what it was really about.
Kenna "and friends" decided to raise awareness for the GLOBAL WATER CRISIS by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and documenting the feat. THIS is beyond awesome, it's an act of a global citizen. Taking yourself out of your bubble, comfort zone and not only pushing yourself to the limit but also forcing yourself to treasure a FREE COMMODITY we routinely take for granted.
I often bring up the joke Chris Rock once told about how we are the only spoiled ass nation that wastes money on things like bottled water.....it's free. Think about it....Check it...

The power of thoughts, words, and actions...
If you ever have a moment to be an influence, a mentor, a guide, an advice-giver, a role model, How will you take the time? How will you choose those words? Who will you be to that person?

Get on the bus yall...
I'm sure most of you might have gotten this email or read this article by now...but just in case, here's what John served up to those muddasuckas at the Post for their rather uncouth cartoon:
John Legend is calling for a boycott of the New York Post after the newspaper ran a controversial cartoon that has been widely criticized as racist. Read his open letter below.
Dear Editor:
I'm trying to understand what possible motivation you may have had for publishing that vile cartoon depicting the shooting of the chimpanzee that went crazy. I guess you thought it would be funny to suggest that whomever was responsible for writing the Economic Recovery legislation must have the intelligence and judgment of a deranged, violent chimpanzee, and should be shot to protect the larger community. Really? Did it occur to you that this suggestion would imply a connection between President Barack Obama and the deranged chimpanzee? Did it occur to you that our President has been receiving death threats since early in his candidacy? Did it occur to you that blacks have historically been compared to various apes as a way of racist insult and mockery? Did you intend to invoke these painful themes when you printed the cartoon?
If that's not what you intended, then it was stupid and willfully ignorant of you not to connect these easily connectable dots. If it is what you intended, then you obviously wanted to be grossly provocative, racist and offensive to the sensibilities of most reasonable Americans. Either way, you should not have printed this cartoon, and the fact that you did is truly reprehensible. I can't imagine what possible justification you have for this. I've read your lame statement in response to the outrage you provoked. Shame on you for dodging the real issue and then using the letter as an opportunity to attack Rev. Sharpton. This is not about Rev. Sharpton. It's about the cartoon being blatantly racist and offensive.
I believe in freedom of speech, and you have every right to print what you want. But freedom of speech still comes with responsibilities and consequences. You are responsible for printing this cartoon, and I hope you experience some real consequences for it. I'm personally boycotting your paper and won't do any interviews with any of your reporters, and I encourage all of my colleagues in the entertainment business to do so as well. I implore your advertisers to seriously reconsider their business relationships with you as well.
You should print an apology in your paper acknowledging that this cartoon was ignorant, offensive and racist and should not have been printed.
I'm well aware of our country's history of racism and violence, but I truly believe we are better than this filth. As we attempt to rise above our difficult past and look toward a better future, we don't need the New York Post to resurrect the images of Jim Crow to deride the new administration and put black folks in our place. Please feel free to criticize and honestly evaluate our new President, but do so without the incendiary images and rhetoric.
Sincerely,
John Legend
*PREACH. We mustn't forget the responsibility, utility and duty we have to guide the future. Most critically now. Obama has called for service, what are you doing?

Everyone wants to be us...
...until the cops come.
Perhaps it is supremely most monumental for the oldest living creatures on this planet such as Larry King, those who have seen it all, to envision ever seeing a black president. It must be core-shaking because where in the hey hey would you think it OK to say the following...
You dorkface! Is that a compliment?! After Tavis illustrates all this rich history THAT is what you thought to say?!...That's one of those chuckle to your friends behind closed doors because you're not so sure it's okay comments. BECAUSE IT WAS STOOPID! DOOFUS!

How interesting is this...

Now at a time where gift giving is dreaded by some and it's been a rough year for many, I found some really cool news today. It seems Baghdad has finally been able to celebrate their first public Christmas...check it out:
By Jill Dougherty CNN
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- From a distance, it looks like an apparition: a huge multi-colored hot-air balloon floating in the Baghdad sky, bearing a large poster of Jesus Christ. Below it, an Iraqi flag.
Welcome to the first-ever public Christmas celebration in Baghdad, held Saturday and sponsored by the Iraqi Interior Ministry. Once thought to be infiltrated by death squads, the Ministry now is trying to root out sectarian violence -- as well as improve its P.R. image.
The event takes place in a public park in eastern Baghdad, ringed with security checkpoints. Interior Ministry forces deployed on surrounding rooftops peer down at the scene: a Christmas tree decorated with ornaments and tinsel; a red-costumed Santa Claus waving to the crowd, an Iraqi flag draped over his shoulders; a red-and-black-uniformed military band playing stirring martial music, not Christmas carols.
On a large stage, children dressed in costumes representing Iraq's many ethnic and religious groups -- Kurds, Turkmen, Yazidis, Christians, Arab Muslims not defined as Sunni or Shiite -- hold their hands aloft and sing "We are building Iraq!" Two young boys, a mini-policeman and a mini-soldier sporting painted-on mustaches, march stiffly and salute.
Even before I can ask Interior Ministry spokesman Major-General Abdul Karim Khalaf a question, he greets me with a big smile. "All Iraqis are Christian today!" he says.
*Well Iraq, welcome to a never-ending plummet into consumerism lol but glad your children get to participate in the fun that is Santa and shiny things and non-violence this Holiday season...

A proud day in black Hollywood..
and no real surprise here..
I wish more black stars would be this brave. Times are changing and although we are one of the most homophobic races on the planet, that doesn't make it ok. This takes courage and I know it will help many young black people struggling in the closet all over.

I copped one...

My friend and I found this on Kanye's site and ordered one IMMEDIATELY.
I love the boost of propaganda paraphernalia all around, but it's the particularly innovative that I plan on keeping for my kids, pulling out of a box one day all tattered (ya know when it's perrrrfect) and explaining the roaring 20's of their mother that they missed. Then passing it along so they can rock it, with their 2020 Creative Recs lol, into the classroom and be the hip kid with the eccentric mother.

Are you going?
Looks like the whole nation is already making plans for January 20th...where will you be?
D.C. hotels almost full for inauguration
BY ELLEN CREAGER
• FREE PRESS TRAVEL WRITER •
NOVEMBER 6, 2008
Just one day after Sen. Barack Obama was elected president, nearly every hotel in and around Washington, D.C., was sold out for Inauguration Day on Jan. 20.
But where there is a will, there's a way.
"I heard the closest hotel open was in Maryland," said Crystal Smith of Detroit, who plans to travel with a large group on several coaches to Washington on Jan. 19.
"But it's not a bad thing, because we can sleep on the bus. We can camp out on the buses, take blankets and leave the heat on, and we'll have bathrooms on the bus."
As of Wednesday, her idea wasn't looking so bad.
The Hyatt Fair Lakes in Fairfax, Va., still had available rooms for Jan. 19-22 at a rate of $339 a night, but the rooms had to be paid in advance and were nonrefundable. The Wingate Chantilly Dulles Airport had openings for $297 per night with the same restrictions. Other rooms were even further out.
"I'm finding rooms in Baltimore," said Pam Nikitas, owner of Joan Anderson Travel in Detroit. "But I'm not finding anything in the city."
However, flights were easy to find. The fare for a Jan. 19-22 round-trip from Detroit to Washington Reagan National Airport was $221 on U.S. Airways and $247 on Northwest Airlines.
The Greyhound bus might take 15 hours, but an advance nonrefundable fare was just $75 round-trip. And with cheap gas prices, driving the 9 1/2 hours at $2.19 a gallon would cost roughly $44 each way.
Watching the parade down Pennsylvania Avenue on Jan. 20 is free, but if you want to join in inaugural balls or activities, it'll cost you plenty.
Web sites such as InauguralTickets.com and GreatSeats.com were selling bleacher and viewing stand parade tickets for about $400 and up. Tickets for the actual swearing-in ceremony ranged from about $600 for standing on the National Mall to about $15,000 for two VIP seats. Tickets for inaugural balls were running about $1,300 and up. Smith, who invented the Obama Hustle dance and will try to perform it in D.C., also has one other plan for her Inauguration Day trip.
Before the coaches leave Detroit, she wants them to drive into Woodlawn Cemetery on Woodward, past the tomb of Rosa Parks.
"I want to ride past her grave on the bus, then straight out of town to Washington," she said.

A lil inside mi noggin..

- I'm blunt...and rather observant...DUH that means I should blog! I suffer from, no let me rephrase, I combat living with an AVM on a daily basis. An AVM is an Abnormal Veinous Malformation which affects about 250,000 people in the US (http://www.cumc.columbia.edu/dept/cerebro/AVM.htm#Link8). It affects everyone differently, for me it's caused a constant headache since 2003...litterally. I've been in countless doctors offices, been poked and proded, been through the emotions of being misdiagnosed with a brain tumor. Needless to say, I've been through a lot and not just because of my...let's call it an ailment. Above all I've developed a less than common outlook on life and perception of things.Don't for one minute misconstrue, I'm in no way a victim, I'm self-sufficient almost to a fault and encourage others to turn their weaknesses into empowerment. It builds character and makes for one hell of a screenplay ha! That combined with growing up immersed in a semi-charmed world, and the glitz and glamour of Hollyweird leads to some interesting anecdotes...Here are my thoughts...
